We shopped in an unusual section of the store to create a durable, wipeable and cushioned playmat that is great for outdoor fun at home or on-the-go. This 70 inch round playmat all began with a bright and colorful tablecloth. That’s right, a tablecloth! Just a couple of materials and a naptime (or two) spent at the sewing machine, and we are ready for warm days spent in the sunshine.
Materials: 2 70″ Round Vinyl Tablecloths (we found ours in the seasonal section of Walmart), Quilt Batting, 5+ Yards of 2″ Wide Ribbon, 5+ Yards of Pom Pom Trim, Sewing Machine, Pins, Scissors
Using the 70″ round tablecloth as a guide, cut your batting and back fabric (if you’re not using a second 70″ round tablecloth) to perfectly match. You will now have three pieces that are the exact same size.
To keep all three pieces of fabric together, pin your wide ribbon along the entire circumference. Half of the ribbon should be visible from the front, and the other half from the back.
Crank up that sewing machine (or, ahem, ask your mom to) and sew your ribbon onto the playmat as a binding. You should be sewing through the two layers of the tablecloth, the batting and the ribbon. A standard sewing machine needle, stitch and thread worked just fine.
Now add a little bit of whimsy by adding a pom pom trim. Determine which side will be the top, then pin your trim to the ribbon trim. If your baby is still in the put-everything-in-the-mouth stage, you’ll want to skip the pom pom trim until later for safety’s sake. Sew it on and your project is complete!
This playmat will be wonderful for us to use in our yard and at the park. I love how easily it wipes clean making it perfect for picnics, snack time and even outdoor art projects. The added layer of plush quilt batting means it’s soft and cushioned enough to protect and comfort younger babies and toddlers.
